About the Chief Instructor

Our Sensei, Tom Kuhne, has been in Judo since 1962. He has been the Chief instructor of the Kirkwood Judo Club since 1980. He has produced many local and national competitors.

During his competitive years he competed against many of the top Judo players in the nation and the world. He was a team member representing the United States against teams from Japan, Germany, and Korea. He has competed in two Olympic Festivals and was an alternate for the 1980 Olympic team. He won a gold medal in 1993 at the U.S. Nationals, and was the sports coordinator for Judo in the 1994 Olympic Festival held here in St. Louis.

In May of 2002, he married Tara Chase Kuhne, and after a short stay in Kentucky the two of them returned to St. Louis, so that Tom could continue in the position that he is so aptly suited, the Chief Instructor of the Kirkwood Judo Club.

In November of 2003, Tom and Tara became the proud parents of Ian Thomas Kuhne.
