The
Kirkwood Judo Club is offering a new class entitled
Beginning
Judo for Adults
More Details
This class will
introduce you to, and give you a basic understanding of the
Martial Art of Judo. The goal here will
be to improve the fitness level of all of the participants,
as well as, providing a good foundation of skills that can
be used for self-protection and self-defense.
Notice that self-protection, and self-defense are
listed separately here. The reason is
that, though they can occur at the same time, they are not
exactly the same thing. A good example
of this is Ukemi or Falling Skills.
While they are generally taught with the idea of defending
yourself against an attacker who manages to throw you, they
are equally valuable to you when the chair that you are
standing on gives way, or the three year old that your are
chasing makes a Walter Peyton like move on you, and you find
yourself heading for the ground.
The final goal of the
abbreviated class is to get you ready for our regular class
in the shortest possible amount of time. Students will also
be offered the opportunity to Join our Saturday Morning
class immediately, for extra practice.
Tentative Schedule
The Components of the
Class are: Warm-ups and Stretching (Approx. 20 minutes),
Instruction of Standing and groundwork, including
Demonstration, Practice, and where applicable a look at the
techniques self-defense applications (Approx. 50 min.),
Conditioning exercises and drills (Approx.10 min.),
Stretching and cool-down exercises (Approx 10 min.)
What To Expect
Expect to be physically
challenged. This class is not the
type of physically overwhelming workout that our competitors
must endure while training for the National and
International events in which they participate.
However, you can expect to wake up a little sore the
next day, for the first few times.
Gradually though your conditioning will improve, the classes
will seem easier, and that is when I will challenge you
more. Though it is unlikely that at the
completion of this six-week course, you will need to
register yourself as a lethal weapon you will have a basic
understanding of ways to protect yourself in self-defense,
and self-protection situations. In the end
you will also be fully qualified to, to continue your
training in our on-going classes.
What You
Need To Get Started
Other than your fees, you don’t really need anything
special on the first day of class. You
can simply wear Loose Fitting Sweats.
Eventually (by the 3rd Class) you will need to
purchase a uniform (called a Judo Gi).
You can get one from wherever you choose, but Three Rivers Aikidois not far from the Club, and their uniforms
are reasonably priced at around $65.00.
Their phone number is
314-645-2345. For a
greater selection check out
The JudoGi Store. All students will be asked to
sign a waiver, and if you are under 21 you will need to have
a parent available to sign as well.
Fingernails should be neatly trimmed, and all jewelry should
be removed prior to coming on to the mat.
Get to class about 15 to 20 minutes early for the
first class so that you can get your paperwork taken care
of, and learn how to tie you Belt if you have already
purchased a Gi. Later, 10 or 15 minutes
early is sufficient.
